The Matrix item is used to create Likert Scale and other data collection tools that contain multiple questions or criteria that are evaluated with the same set of answer choices (a scale).

See How to Create a Likert Scale Evaluation

Important

Responses in the Matrix item can be set to radio button or checkbox. Scale point values can be set for each response choice.

(info) The Labels correspond to the response categories or scale options, while the Question phrases or criteria are be typed in the corresponding text boxes.

By clicking the relevant buttons, more columns or rows can be added:

  • add more fields by clicking the Add New Answer button,
  • delete any extra field by clicking the X icon appearing when hovering over the row to be deleted.

Use the buttons in the item panel for further options:

Asterisk: Answer required - if activated, a user cannot submit the checklist until that item is answered, that is, they cannot leave it blank.

Comment box - when activated, a text field is displayed at the item during data entry, providing space for additional notes.

Copy - a fully created item can be duplicated, thereby copying the question and all the provided answers.

As with any added item, a copied one can be freely modified as desired.

Scoring

Clicking the Points button  displays the score value fields for each response.

Responses can also be:

NS (not scored) - selecting the specific response does not affect the final score

B (bonus) - the points in the value field do not contribute to the maximum achievable score for the item, but they are added to the achieved score.

Points assigned to a response can be whole numbers (1, 2, 3 . . .), negative values (-1 ,-2, -3 . . .), or decimals. (.25, .5 .75 . . .) LearningSpace identifies the response with the highest score value as the “correct” response.
A matrix with multiple rows is considered one item for reporting purposes.
