Section Score

IMPORTANT: Above the level of items - i.e. upwards from the level of sections - learners' performance is calculated in percentage.

From

  • the achieved points for the answers to all the items of a section
  • and the maximum achieved point value,

the system calculates a score for each section: the Section Score

The Section Score can be displayed as

  • a percentage value: the number of collected points divided by the number of maximum achievable points in the section
  • natural score or per item score depeding on the score format configured.

As soon as Section weights start playing a role in score calculation (e.g Case total score, Activity total score or Skill area scores), scores can no longer can be shown in natural scores in the Preset reports, only in percentages. On the other hand, the Scores report can be forced to switch any percentage score to natural score.

pi = collected points of a learner, for each item of the section
pmax,i = maximum achievable points for each item of the section
n = number of items in the section

Example:

A section contains two items, the maximum point to achieve for the first one is 2 and for the second one is 1,5. The learner got 1,5 points for his answer to the first one and 0,8 for the second one.

Therefore the learner's section score is: (1,5+0,8 / 2+1,5) * 100 = 65,71 %

NOTES:

  • The section score is calculated from the items for which the achievable points are different from 0.
  • The maximum point for an item is the value of the highest-valued non-bonus answer.
For example: If there is a bonus answer with 6  points and another, non-bonus one with 4, the maximum points for this item will be only 4 points.
If a question has only bonus-type answers, its maximum point as counted into the section maximum will be 0. The maximum achievable points for a section is the sum of maximum points for items.
As a result, the sum of achieved points of a respondent may exceed the maximum achievable points. In other words, the section score of a learner can be higher than 100% if the section includes a bonus answer.
  • If a learner has selected a not scored answer, the maximum achievable points for the particular section will not include the maximum points from the question with the selected not scored answer.
This means that the learner does not have to achieve as many points for reaching the same section score as if he had chosen another answer.

Class Section Average

Section result can not only be calculated for one particular learner but also for a whole class. From the achieved section scores of the learners of each learner group, the system calculates an average score for each section: the Class Section Average.

The Class Section Average is a percentage value: the sum of section scores divided by the number of the learners who have a record.

sl = section score of each learner of the learner group of an Activity, for one particular section
n = number of learners of the learner group of the Activity who have a record for the section

Class section averages are visible in the Class Average line of the Group Performance Review report referring to a single Case.
